Workshop with Richard Chance: Old Time / Bluegrass Guitar Workshop

This workshop will help players understand and improve technique, stylistic, and etiquette aspects of playing old time and bluegrass guitar accompaniment. Players of other rhythm instruments will also benefit. Highly recommended for intermediate players who wish to gain more confidence playing accompaniment guitar in these genres. A small donation will be requested. Richard is a traditional and bluegrass player originally from North Carolina and has over 40 years experience in these styles and more. Space may be limited.

Jeff arranged a very worthwhile workshop with lots of good information and handouts. And we got some good mandolin backup tips too. Thanks Richard and Larry!

Very good overview about playing rhythm guitar. Went over practical techniques for playing better in groups and increasing satisfaction. Covered the purpose and central role of rhythm from the soloist, dancer, and listener's perspectives. Provided the motivation for life long enjoyment of playing music.

If you missed Richard Chance's workshop, don't miss the next one! I don't play melody much, but I gained a new respect for the value of playing good rhythm guitar - the heartbeat of playing in community with others. Richard's handouts and CD are a great resource for practicing base runs. Seems there is no shortcut to improvement - it takes practice, but playing is fun! Ditto everything Mike Stubblefield said in his comments. Here's Richard's website. http://www.... Janice

Special thanks to Richard Chance and Larry Edwards - two wonderful musicians - for conducting a great workshop. They provided plenty of valuable information and advice on the etiquette and nuances of playing old time music. Lots of helpful handouts were provided including an instructional CD. Great advice on playing rhythm and backup guitar. The use of simple, tasteful bass runs to enhance or compliment a song without getting in the way. Ways to make rhythm playing fun and exciting and rewarding. The importance of being a great listener. Thanks again Richard and Larry for sharing your time and expertise. - Mike
